President Viv's Welcome

I am very proud to be the President of one of the oldest Rotary clubs in the country. The club has a long tradition of serving the community, locally and in developing countries, in the true spirit of Rotary.

I became a Rotarian in 2010, shortly after retiring. I had enjoyed a 40 year career as a civil engineer in the public sector and was keen to remain active and continue to serve the community, albeit on a voluntary basis.

I am married to Pauline, a retired schoolteacher and we have a daughter Megan. During my year of presidency, Pauline will serve as President of the Canterbury Inner Wheel.

Rotary is a wonderful international movement, devoted to service. We use our expertise, enthusiasm and energy to help our community in a variety of ways. We help those in need due to economic or social circumstances or those who are afflicted by poor health. We also try to offer opportunities for young people to fulfil their potential, whether in encouraging them to become good citizens, preparing them for a successful career or by excelling in sports or the arts. For me, the main appeal of Rotary is that it can make a difference both locally and globally. I was inspired by the campaign to eradicate Polio worldwide and this has demonstrated to me that, by working together with a shared vision, we are capable of achieving great things.

Rotary encourages fellowship amongst its members. In addition to our regular luncheon meetings, we have a programme of social events, visits, talks and cultural activities. Strengthening the bonds of friendship helps us to work together effectively as a club to serve our community.

The Rotary Club of Canterbury has prospered over 93 years by adapting to a changing world, whilst retaining its traditional ethos. We look forward to our centenary and beyond and are determined to remain active and relevant to our society through “service above self”.
