Tools for Self Reliance update: Covid-19

The current health crisis is having a huge effect on many charities and causes at a time when they are needed most - including many that we support. But there other ways we can help these charities.

Please note: This news post was originally published in April 2020; Pilgrims Hospices no longer participates in Tools for Self-Reliance.

To find out more about the scheme, please visit their website.

As regular readers will know, we have had a long-standing relationship with Tools for Self Reliance (TFSR), a charity that refurbishes old, unwanted but good quality tools so that they can be send to other countries where they are given to poor and underprivileged people, together with training, so those that are trained can provide for their families.

Sadly, due to the current global health crisis the local TFSR workshop at Pilgrim's Hospices has had to close; the main Head Office in Southampton and its warehouse have also had to close, as have the various training establishments that used the refurbished tools for trade training.

This is particularly sad right now as the need to help poorer countries remains as strong as ever, if not more so.

However, people can still help the charity. For instance, you can donate here via different routes.

People can also buy items online that are sold in aid of TFSR - see here for items sold by different sellers that help the charity - ebay has a system of getting the money to the charity in question. Lots of these items will interest collectors, those that like vintage/retro things, or people who buy props for TV or the stage.

Finally, those who use Amazon to buy goods online may be interested to find out about Amazon Smile - click here to learn about this. According to this, Amazon "donates 0.5% of the net purchase price (excluding VAT, returns and shipping fees) of eligible purchases to the charitable organisation of your choice": to support TFSR you just select Tools For Self Reliance from the charity list when prompted (you can do the same for other charities too).

Don't forget, every little helps!
