We were delighted to receive a project completion report from the Rotary Club of Kandy on a project our club funded to improve access to water at an underserved junior school in Sri Lanka.
The report, titled “Access to clean water for underserved school,” explains how Rotary Club of Kandy and the Centre for Handicapped worked together to bring sustainable, clean drinking water to students and staff at Maussawa Junior School. Having access to clean water makes a real difference to health, hygiene, and the children’s learning environment.
Regular readers will recall that we earlier helped fund a prosthetic limb project in Sri Lanka, which has also been completed. That project used £450 of a £1,000 donation via our International Committee. The remainder has been used for this water project.
This clean water project involved constructing an entire water distribution system: a water tank, a pump, tap points, and a sink. Construction started in July 2025 and was completed successfully. In September there was an opening ceremony with official handover to the school. During the ceremony the team noticed the that youngsters needed drinking cups; these were later supplied using leftover funds.
In their report, the Rotary Club of Kandy thanked us for our support, noting that the project has created “lasting change” by ensuring “the school community no longer faces the daily struggle of accessing safe water.” They ended with: “your commitment to uplifting communities through such meaningful initiatives is truly commendable.”
We look forward to collaborating again with the Rotary Club of Kandy on future initiatives.
