Pupils were asked to write an original story with a Christmas theme, unaided and in their own handwriting. We were looking for interesting and imaginative stories. Quality and range of expression, spelling, grammar and handwriting were to be taken into account, making due allowance for the age of the author. The story could be neatly presented on one side of A4 paper, comprise around 100 words and could be decorated. The Stories were judged separately for each of the six national curriculum primary school years and prizes were awarded to each year.
Schools were requested to undertake some initial selection of entries and to submit the best three stories in each year. The overall winners were awarded a prize of book tokens to the value of £20.00 and the runner-up a prize of book tokens to the value of £15.00.
We were amazed at the quality of entries submitted and the judges had a very difficult job deciding the winners. Thanks are due to Margaret, Mary, Peter and Dee for acting as judges.
Rotary President Martin Ward (with chain) and Alan Mepstead (centre) had the very pleasant task of visiting all the winning schools and presenting the prizes at their school assemblies.
Congratulations to Blean, St Stephens, and St Johns Primary schools and to Kent College Junior school on their winning entries.
The children’s names are (left to right): Victor, Marcelo and Freya. The other standing adults are Stephen Pywell, Head Teacher at St Stephens and Karina Philip, Literacy Coordinator.
