We can’t believe how quickly the days are passing for our MGSE participants! Days 2 and 3 flew by with a mix of vocational, civic and social activities (including a meeting with the Lord Mayor of Canterbury) and ended with a relaxed barbecue that allowed friendships to grow – both among participants and with our club members.
On Tuesday (Day 2) the participants split up and got a chance to visit a business or organization that is connected in some way with their studies, interests or current career goal. These included Girlings Solicitors, Knowler Farm Holiday Activities, construction company The Brett Group, greeting card specialists Noel Tatt Ltd, and architects James Clague Ltd. This interaction is a key part of the MGSE scheme and of Rotary activities in general, when we try to support and encourage young people in their field/careers.
In the evening MGSE participants went to Ye Olde Beverlie in St Stephen’s, Canterbury to be introduced to the traditional game of “Bat & Trap”. There were joined by members and guests of other Rotary Clubs, including a large contingent from the Rotary Club of Canterbury Sunrise. Everyone had a great time and it was wonderful to see how much the MGSE folk enjoyed the quintessentially English pub sport! Perhaps they with take what they’ve learnt back home with them!
Wednesday (Day 3) started with a wonderful opportunity to meet the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Keji Moses, (also a Rotarian) at Canterbury’s historic Tower House (the Lord Mayor’s official residence). This was followed by a lunch, an outing to Kent’s wonderful countryside, a walk to see Stelling Minnis Windmill and, finally, a relaxing barbecue at the home of our Past President Maxine Blades.
We hope the visitors felt they had a good metaphorical (and literal!) taste of what Kent has to offer.
