We are pleased to have been able to donate £500 to disaster relief charity ShelterBox following the terrible floods In Pakistan recently in which “hundreds of people have lost their lives, and tens of thousands of people have been impacted.”
According to ShelterBox’s website, “flash floods and landslides have swept away entire villages”. It was certainly distressing seeing news coverage when the floods first took place. Ongoing now is the process of helping the many individuals and families affected. ShelterBox works with “disaster-affected communities to provide the emergency shelter, essential items and training needed to support people in the long process of rebuilding their lives” and in this case ShelterBox is providing emergency shelter and essential items including:
- Shelter repair kits to repair or rebuild shelters
- Water filters and carriers to ensure access to clean drinking water
- Mosquito nets to help prevent the spread of disease, especially dengue and malaria
It was no surprise that our international committee agreed to the £500 donation following a callout from Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) and Rotary South East UK (our Rotary district, no. 1120).
