There was lots going on at Day 2 of Canterbury Children’s Literature Festival this weekend – authors to meet, crafts to do, songs to sing … and even kid’s lit-themed donuts! One of our members had a great time volunteering at a performance of “Kidsummer Night’s Dream” at Canterbury’s Old Synagogue – such a lovely event for families, getting little ones loving one of Shakespeare’s more popular plays!
The 50 min performance – put on by Canterbury Shakespeare Festival – certainly lived up to its billing as a “magical play full of fast-paced, interactive fun for all the family!” Starring three performers and some clever role play, there was plenty of comedy and all the confusion of Shakespeare’s original play in which young lovers Hermia, Helena, Demi and Xander get mixed up following a tiff between Fairy King Oberon and Queen Titania. Along the way mechanicals Bottom and Quince make an appearance and mischievous Puck plays his naughty pranks. There was plenty of audience interaction, making it immense fun for everyone, especially for the youngsters: singing, games, water pistols, bubbles … with lots of real quotes from Shakespeare too!
Little ones also enjoyed a free bookmark making craft sessions run by Create Arts and Crafts between performances.
