Millennium Scholarship Trust Fund

Travel grants available to young people from the Canterbury area wishing to spend time abroad working on aid projects supported by recognised charities.

To mark the millennium, the Rotary Club of Canterbury set up a charitable grant aid fund for young adults aged between 18 and 25.

The idea is to assist young people who wish to give service to an overseas community in need of help, either in a gap year or after further education. We expect the individual to offer themselves through a nationally registered charity and to live in the Canterbury area.

To date, we have helped 59 people who have shared £29,900 between them. This year, we expect to award a total of £2,600, which may be allocated to one applicant, or may be divided between a number of deserving candidates.

Among the recent successful candidates who have come back to talk to the Club about their time abroad are:

Charlotte, a trainee Doctor, working with a team of Floating Doctors caring for the scattered villagers in Panama.

Matt, working with Raleigh International to assist the poor in Nicaragua.

Katie and Sophie, former pupils of the Archbishops School, working with the poor in the suburbs of Durban, South Africa.

Hannah, working with a deprived tribe in Peru.

All these young people have had life-changing experiences being able to help others, as well as greatly broaden their own outlook on life. Often they have had to endure what was to them, primitive conditions. All of them have benefited from, and enjoyed their time, abroad.

Full details of how the Trust Fund was set up and operates are found in the Members’ Area (Club Members only login and click HERE).
