Penultimate day of Volunteers’ Week!

1-7 June is Volunteers’ Week and a great chance for everyone to show their appreciation for volunteers. It’s also a chance for volunteers to give themselves a little pat on the back for all their hard work!

NVCO, the organisers of Volunteers’ Week, say “Volunteers’ Week is a time to say thanks for the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering.”

Volunteering is very rewarding in all sorts of ways. It can help people help others, and make them feel they’ve contributed to society. They also learn new skills, gain confidence, meet new people and often do fun things. Since the start of the pandemic many people who have never volunteered before took up the challenge – whether it was shopping for an elderly/shielding neighbour or volunteering at the local Covid vaccination centre. Experienced volunteers have faced new challenges too – Covid-related restrictions have hampered work at the same time that demand has been high. Fundraising has been difficult and many groups – like us – have had to think out of the box to raise funds. And yet, on the whole, they have all managed to keep going. We applaud volunteers for all their efforts and hope that those new to volunteering will continue to take on such roles.

Today is the day for “The Big Lunch” – but even if you haven’t got anything organised, why not raise a glass and give a cheer for all the volunteers that work so hard, especially those that worked through the pandemic?!

If you’re not yet volunteering, why don’t you give it a thought? There are lots of local organisations that need volunteers. And if you’re interested in finding out more about what we do at the Rotary Club of Canterbury. drop us a line:
