New member Shabana Raman inducted

Shabana Raman was one of two new members inducted at our recent meeting. Here we give a little bit of background about her.

Shabana is originally from the island of Mauritius where she grew up until she came to the UK to go to University.

She completed her studies and trained to be a teacher in London until she moved to Canterbury to take up a new job in 2008; she has lived here since.

She currently works for the EKC Group – a family of six community-based colleges around East Kent. Shabana is the Head of Mathematics at Ashford College and the Group Mathematics Advanced Practitioner, where she leads on professional development strategies across the Group in the teaching, learning and assessment of mathematics. She is also the lead researcher for the Group.

Shabana is very passionate about politics and community service, both in the UK and in Mauritius.  She was a judge for the English-Speaking Union Public Speaking competition for three consecutive years.

Shabana is also a trustee for the Invicta Summer Academy, a charity that was founded this summer to help students in Kent aged 5-16 years old bridge the attainment gap caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was very successful and was extended to reach students from all over the country in its second week. The Academy delivered over 36,000 free learning opportunities over the six weeks of the summer holidays and continues to provide free lessons to students from low-income families all over the country.

In her spare time, Shabana is an avid reader. She also loves cooking and trying out new dishes for her friends and family.

She is very excited to finally be a member of the Rotary Club of Canterbury as she comes from a family of Rotarians in Mauritius. She would like to increase the membership and help raise the profile of the club on social media to reach a wider group of people.

She also wishes to establish a bilateral relationship between the club in Canterbury and others in Mauritius.
