Supporting needy kids again through POWYC

Local organisations are doing great things to help those struggling in these hard times. We’ve been delighted to help the Prince of Wales Youth Club in Canterbury again thanks to a Rotary District Grant to help provide 1,000 lunches to needy children.

As regular readers will know, our Club has been very closely involved with supporting the Prince of Wales Youth Club (POWYC) for many years.

A week ago we responded to a plea for help to buy food for packed lunches for needy children in the local area by donating £550, to which was added a further £1,000 generously donated by the Millennium Scholarship Fund, a charity we set up to help local young people.

Our efforts didn’t stop there, and discussions over the last weekend were held with our Rotary District Organisation, which works with the 80 or so Rotary Clubs in Kent. Within 48 hours of starting this process the District Officer responsible for grants, Ralph Stanger, told us that £780 would be donated to this worthy cause. Our Club members have agreed to contribute a further £920.

With this £1,700 donation the POWYC will be able to distribute 1,000 more lunches to the youngsters over the next two weeks. As well as the lunches the packs contain well-being work sheets for the often-struggling parents, along with tea bags, coffee, hot chocolate sachets, milk pods and sugar sachets.

Organising £3,250 in a week has been a challenge, but everybody is delighted at the speed and outcome at this time of crisis and we would like to thank everyone that helped in the process.

It’ll still be some time before a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel during this pandemic, so we are sure that Joey WIcks, the indefatigable POWYC coordinator, would still welcome any donations. Simply put, when they run out of money, the packed lunches for these needy children will, sadly, cease.
