The weather over the past few days has been just right for a safari – so it was the perfect time for our Club to hold its annual Safari Supper. Never heard of one? Read on!
Our club has been holding Safari Suppers for a number of years now. They don’t involve wild animals or Land Rovers trekking across remote Saharan plains – rather, they take place right here in Canterbury and the surrounding area. The concept is simple and sociable: members enjoy a three-course meal, with each course hosted at a different member’s home.
As tradition dictates, this year’s Safari Supper began at the home of our outgoing President, Maxine Blades, where all guests enjoyed delicious starters and the much-anticipated announcement of the winner of our Sailor Ted competition. After that, members were each handed envelopes revealing the location of their next destination – the venue for their main course.
Off they went to their assigned hosts, where they enjoyed warm hospitality, engaging conversation, and a variety of culinary delights – from home-grown vegetables to aromatic pilau rice and rich, coconut infused korma.
Once the main course was done, it was time to open a second set of envelopes, directing members to their different dessert venues. A wonderful range of sweet treats awaited – including classic apple pie and a beautifully presented pavlova topped with fresh seasonal fruit.
It was a truly enjoyable event, made even more special by the warm weather, lovely gardens, and the chance to spend time together in such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. There was lots of laughter and conversations flowed easily, ranging from gardening tips, music and home decor to politics – and even the latest developments in artificial intelligence!
One first-time attendee summed it up perfectly:
“It was a really wonderful occasion – a lovely day, a lovely time, lovely company. It was so nice to see people’s homes and gardens, and to enjoy the most amazing food. I’m really pleased I went – and I’m already looking forward to next year.”
