A knit little solution for Tools for Self Reliance

Sometimes our Rotarians have to think out of the box when they’re helping out various charities. The other day this proved to be the case for Rtn Bob Anderson.

Please note: This news post was originally published in May 2018; Pilgrims Hospices no longer participates in Tools for Self-Reliance.

Our Club has been closely involved with the charity “Tools for Self Reliance” (TFSR) for many years, and we’ve helped the charity to establish a local workshop in Canterbury (the only workshop in Kent) with 14 volunteers.

Rtn Bob Anderson regularly collects and delivers tools for the charity, but was recently faced with a sizeable problem. When he said “yes” to the offer of a knitting machine he hadn’t appreciated it was the size of a small upright piano, with accompanying parts as well.

Of no use to TFSR, Bob sourced another charity with similar objectives (Tools with a Misson, TWAM). They were delighted to accept it; it has now been collected, and after a bit of TLC ad maintenance the machine will shortly be on its way to Africa to help create livelihoods.

Unperturbed by this latest challenge, Bob says “I’m always happy to help out with the disposal of any unwanted items fellow Rotarians may have!” We’re very pleased the machine will be helping others – far better than adding to landfill waste!
