Ukraine: PTSD Therapy Appeal

Ukraine: PTSD Therapy & Rotary’s call to action. Ukraine continues to dominate the headlines as it suffers mounting devastating destruction and loss. Alongside the visible damage, Ukrainian civilians – especially mothers and children – are facing the hidden wounds of trauma.

Ukraine continues to dominate the headlines as it suffers mounting devastating destruction and loss. Alongside the visible damage, Ukrainian civilians – especially mothers and children – are facing the hidden wounds of trauma.

War-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects around 25% of the civilian population of Ukraine and a further 25% of the population have a significantly increased risk of developing PTSD in the future. While European countries provide PTSD care for service personnel, there is little support for civilians – the innocent victims of this war who are daily living with fear, grief and displacement. Some of the worst hit are families left at home to cope whilst the husband and father is away fighting – or worse…

Logo of the Pentangular Group of Rotary Clubs from United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, France and GermanyTo address this, the Pentangular group of Rotary Clubs, of which Canterbury is a member, under the leadership of the Rotary Club of Lüdenscheid, is developing a three-year project to train Ukrainian therapists and treat thousands of patients.  The other clubs in the Pentangular group, Lieden in Holland, Leuven in Belgium and St Quentin in France are all running their own fundraising events to support this worthwhile, deeply humanitarian, project.

The plan is to begin with treating 2,000 people in year one, increasing to 6,000 people by year three. Expected results (by 2028) include:

  • 30 trained psychotherapists
  • Treatment of more than 6,000 affected people in total – mainly mothers and their children

The total planned budget of the project is €250,000.*

*Note that this is a Rotary Global Grant project for which RC Lüdenscheid, as the lead Club, will make the Global Grant application.
