Millennium Scholarship Trust Fund

To mark the millennium, the Rotary Club of Canterbury set up a charitable grant aid fund for young adults aged between 18 and 25.

The idea is to assist young people who wish to give service to an overseas community in need of help, either in a gap year or after further education.  We expect the individual to offer themselves through a nationally registered charity and to live in the Canterbury area.

To date, we have helped 40 young people with a total of £19,050 between them.  In 2011, we expect to award a total of £2,600, which may be allocated to one applicant, or may be divided between a number of deserving candidates.

Among the recent successful candidates who have come back to talk to the Club about their time abroad are:

Bryony, who went to Namibia.  She worked in a Clinic in a remote district, helping a nurse tend to the needs of the Bushmen Community.

Jack, who went to Ecuador to teach disadvantaged children.

Katie, who taught in a Residential home for orphans in South Africa.

Elizabeth, who helped in a home for orphaned and disadvantaged children in Mexico.

Kathryne, who worked with underprivileged children in South Africa.

Jessica & Jack, who worked in a camp for disadvantaged children in Mongolia

Colette who taught in Southern India

All these young people have had life-changing experiences being able to help others, as well as greatly broaden their own outlook on life.   Often they have had to endure what was to them, primitive conditions.  All of them have benefited from, and enjoyed their time, abroad.
