The former Archbishop of Canterbury, The Rt Rev and Rt Hon. Lord Carey of Clifton, is to become patron of Top Choir Kent 2011. His Lordship readily accepted the invitation after hearing about the success of the inaugural competition earlier this year.
Top Choir Kent is organised by the Rotary Club of Canterbury and the money raised does to support local and international charities. The winning choir is rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity of performing at an event in the Canterbury Festival.

Lord Carey said of Top Choir Kent: “I salute this great initiative of the Canterbury Rotary Club!” He continued: “Our country has a distinguished history of choral singing, ranging from our long established Cathedral choirs to more modest choirs in our many villages and towns.” The former Archbishop added: “There is nothing quite like singing together to create harmony in friendship and fun - to say nothing of the actual joy of bringing something beautiful out of working together.”
Lord Carey’s gracious patronage has been welcomed by the organisers of Top Choir Kent. The President of the Rotary Club of Canterbury, Robert Yonge, said: “Lord Carey has shown tremendous support for our club over many years. In recognition of this the club made him an Honorary Member for Life in 2008.” He added: “Becoming Patron of Top Choir Kent is another fine example of his Lordship’s wonderful support for our club.”
John Harris, Competition Director of Top Choir Kent, says the former Archbishop involvement is a vote of confidence in the ability of choirs across Kent. He said: “Lord Carey has witnessed first-hand the singing of many of the world’s top choirs, so it is a great honour that he is to become patron of Top Choir Kent 2011.”
It’s hoped that Lord Carey will be able attend the final of Top Choir Kent 2011 at Shirley Hall, King’s School, Canterbury, on Saturday, 16th April, 2011.
